An American Spy...

…is the title of the third and final book in the Milo Weaver trilogy, which will be out in March 2012.

For a year and a half I’d written and edited the book living with the previous title, “American Express,” but apparently there’s a financial services company that actually owns that name, so…

So I like it. It’s an ear-catching title, and very appropriate to the story that will lie between its covers. I’m in the last editing stages right now, and am pretty excited to see this one make its way out into the world. Reception so far (agents, editors) has been stupendous.

You Know What's Going On - story for sale

Inspired—or at least nudged—by Barry Eisler’s recent move into the digital book world, I’m putting a story of mine, called “You Know What’s Going On,” on Amazon for sale (in the US, and in the UK) to Kindles and anyone with the Kindle software (iPads & iPhones, I’m looking at you). This is the start of a vague plan I have to, over the next year, publish two or three more titles in the same way, building up to the release of the final book of the Milo Weaver trilogy, and see what happens.

“You Know What’s Going On” was originally published last year in Otto Penzler’s stellar anthology, Agents of Treachery. It’s a story I’m really pleased with, and it’s a long one too (over 40 pages in the hardback of the anthology). I thought it might be a good piece to start the project with.

The story mixes some of my regular themes of betrayal, self-interest and, on occasion, operational stupidity, with Muslim extremism, which is something I’ve stayed away from previously. I’m not much at summarizing my own plots—suffice to say that it’s set in Geneva, Rome, and Kenya, and its characters are American spies, a Somali jihadist, and a Kenyan policeman.

In a few months, my plan is to collect three other previously published stories—“Hungarian Lessons,” “The Piss-Stained Czech,” and “Investment in Vevey” into a chapbook called Noir Travels. And later in the year—if time affords—I hope to write a Milo Weaver story in preparation for the next book. Given the amount of material that I leave out of my novels, I’m hoping something on the cutting room floor will prove the sturdy seed of a good tale.

For now, though, I hope you enjoy “You Know What’s Going On.” You can pick up your own copy here: US, UK.

Serbian editions

I recently learned that both The Tourist and The Nearest Exit have been sold to Evro Giunti, a Serbian-language publisher. Great news, as this now means my in-laws will be able to read at least two of my novels!

Thank You, Dashiell, Librarians, New York

Last week, I got some wonderful news from Mary Frisque, Executive Director of the North American Branch of the International Association of Crime Writers. Turns out that The Nearest Exit has been nominated for the Hammett Prize! Here are all of us nominees:

Jonathan Eig, Get Capone: The Secret Plot That Captured America’s Most Wanted Gangster (Simon & Schuster)
Tom Franklin, Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter: A Novel (William Morrow)
T. Jefferson Parker, Iron River (Dutton)
Olen Steinhauer, The Nearest Exit (St. Martin’s/Minotaur)

Fantastic news. We won’t know the winner until September, so that gives us most of a year to, you know, sweat it out.

Not only that, but The Nearest Exit actually won a prize! It topped the RUSA (ALA’s Reference and User Services Association) “Adrenaline” reading list! Terrific, indeed.

And the New York Times Book Review was kind enough to make it one of the 100 Notable Books of 2010! Good news all around for that little book.

Coincidentally, it was only last week released in paperback. So…
